This policy explains what data FactMap collects, why, and the choices you have. In short: you don't need an account, and unless you choose to sign in, your scores stay on your device. We measure traffic to understand and improve the game, and we only use cookies for advertising if you agree.

Who we are
FactMap is operated by Tucana Digital SLU, established in Spain. We are the data controller for the data described here.
- Tax ID (CIF/NIF): ESB02731412
- Registered address: Carrer de Pau Claris 173 2-1, 08037 Barcelona, España
- Contact: remi@tucana.digital
What we collect and why
Stored on your device. To let you play without an account, we keep a few things in your browser using local storage: a random, anonymous player identifier, your game progress, scores and streaks, which puzzles you have seen, your cookie choice, and one-time flags (such as whether you have seen the intro). This information stays in your browser. We do not use it to identify you, and you can clear it any time from your browser settings.
Optional account. You can choose to sign in with Google (or Apple). If you do, we receive and store, through our authentication provider Supabase, your email address, your name as shown by that provider, and an account identifier from it. We never see your password, and we cannot post anything or read your contacts. We use this only to recognise you and to link the anonymous player identifier of each browser you sign in on to your account, so your games and stats follow you across devices. Signing in sets cookies that keep you signed in (see the Cookie policy).
Groups. Signed in, you can start or join a private group leaderboard. Only people with a group's invite link can join it. Members of a group you join see your display name (your first name unless you change it) and your daily scores, round by round. Anyone with the invite link sees the group's name and its members' display names. Leave a group and your scores disappear from it.
Weekly email. After you sign in, we ask whether you want the FactMap weekly (new maps and news). Only if you say yes, we send your email address and first name to Kit, our email provider, and keep a record of when and how you agreed. So that each weekly can show your own week, we also send Kit a short summary of your games from the week before (days played, your average, best and worst day, and how you ranked). Every email has a one-click unsubscribe link, and you can also turn it off at the end of your stats page. Deleting your account stops it too.
Traffic analytics. We use Plausible, a privacy-friendly analytics tool that sets no cookies, collects no personal data, and does not track you across sites. It runs for everyone because it processes only anonymous, aggregate figures.
Google Analytics. We use Google Analytics 4 to measure how the game is used (pages viewed, events such as sharing a result, approximate location by country and region, and device and browser type). Google Analytics sets cookies and processes this data on our behalf. We rely on our legitimate interest in understanding and improving the game. You can object at any time by contacting us, or by blocking cookies in your browser.
Aggregate gameplay statistics. On our server (hosted with Supabase) we keep anonymous, aggregate stats to understand and improve the game: for example the two-letter country a game was played from (such as FR or ES), derived from your IP address at the moment of the request. We do not store your IP address. We also keep anonymous counts of clicks on certain links (such as our Patreon), tagged only with the random player identifier above.
Fact suggestions. If you send us a fact or a correction, we keep what you submit so we can review and, where relevant, use it.
Legal bases (GDPR)
- Legitimate interest for analytics (Plausible and Google Analytics) and aggregate statistics, which let us measure traffic and improve the game without identifying you personally. You can object at any time.
- Consent for any advertising or personalisation cookies. These are used only if you choose Accept, and you can withdraw consent any time from Cookie settings.
- Performance of a service for the on-device storage that makes the game work (keeping your progress and settings).
- Performance of a contract for the optional account: we process your sign-in details only to provide the account you asked for.
- Consent for the weekly email, which you give by saying yes and can withdraw at any time by unsubscribing.
Cookies
We explain every cookie and each piece of on-device storage, and how to manage them, on our Cookie policy page. You can change your choice any time using Cookie settings in the menu.
Who we share data with
We do not sell your data. We use a small set of service providers who process data on our behalf to run the site:
- Vercel, for hosting the website.
- Supabase, for the database of facts, aggregate statistics and optional accounts.
- Bunny.net, as a content delivery network for the map files.
- Plausible, for cookieless analytics.
- Google, for Google Analytics (only if you accept cookies).
- Google or Apple, only if you choose to sign in with them, to confirm who you are.
- Kit, to send the weekly email (only if you ask for it).
If you click through to Patreon or to a source link, that visit is governed by the other site's own privacy policy, not ours.
International transfers
Some of these providers process data outside the European Economic Area (for example in the United States). Where that happens, the transfer relies on appropriate safeguards, such as the European Commission's standard contractual clauses or an equivalent mechanism.
How long we keep it
On-device data stays until you clear your browser storage. If you create an account, we keep it until you delete it; deleting it removes your email, name, account links and group memberships, and your past games remain only as anonymous statistics. If you unsubscribe from the weekly email, sending stops right away; Kit keeps your address marked as unsubscribed so it is never emailed by mistake. Ask us if you want it erased completely. Aggregate, anonymous statistics are kept for as long as they are useful for running and improving the game. Because they are aggregate and not tied to you, they cannot be linked back to an individual.
Your rights
Under the GDPR you have the right to access, correct, erase, restrict, or object to the processing of your personal data, and the right to data portability. You can object to analytics at any time, and withdraw consent to advertising cookies from Cookie settings. Most on-device data you can remove yourself by clearing your browser storage. If you have an account, you can delete it yourself at any time from the menu (Delete account).
To exercise any of these rights, contact us at remi@tucana.digital. You also have the right to complain to your local data-protection authority. In Spain, that is the Agencia Española de Protección de Datos (AEPD).
Children
FactMap is a general-audience game and is not directed at young children. We do not knowingly collect personal data from children. If you believe a child has provided us with personal data, contact us and we will remove it.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy as the game evolves. When we do, we will change the "last updated" date above, and for significant changes we will make it clear on the site.
